Jackets blow out North Murray, end the Mountaineers’ undefeated run to end regular season
It was cast as a showdown, but ended up being a blowout as the Rockmart Yellow Jackets knocked out the North Murray Mountaineers in a 42-7 finish to the regular season and to clinch their ninth region title and keep the winning streak alive.
Tucker Parson went 9-for-13 and 150 yards and threw a touchdown pass on the night, while Nate Davis put up 180 yards on 11 carries and three touchdowns in the big victory over North Murray. Cortez Wright added two more touchdowns off of 11 carries and 90 yards.
The whole team combined for 504 yards and scored in every quarter and only allowed the single score during the opening quarter against the Mountaineers.
It marked the 10th win over the Jackets in program history over North Murray, who has yet to beat the Jackets since the first time the two teams met in 2010.
Rockmart now sits at 67 region wins in a row, and will get to continue their streak into next season.
Now at 9-1 and with the ninth region title win in a row – the 18th in program history since 1923 – the Jackets get a first seeding and home playoff game to open the next half of the season with every game a must-win to keep the season alive.
North Murray earlier in October was sitting at the top of the rankings with their undefeated run, but with that brought to a close the Jackets should land at the third or fourth spot and knock North Murray back down within the Top 10.
The Jackets are expected remain at No. 4 after all three teams ahead of them in the rankings in Class AA finished off their seasons ahead of the Jackets in wins.
Official playoff rankings are expected on Sunday. If the Jackets get the No. 4 spot, they’ll host the No. 29 team in the state.
