A big night for Villa Rica put them in position to make a solid run, while Hiram is struggling to even find their footing as the second week of the football season came to a close on Friday night.

The Wildcats notched a 27-9 win over Hiram in the second week road trip across the county line to face the Hornets.

Villa Rica moved to 2-0 with the win, as the Wildcats dominated through the second half to overcome a 9-7 deficit at halftime.

The Hornets score first midway through the first quarter after Owen Briggs notched a 30-yard field goal.

The Wildcats responded with a second-quarter touchdown, but Hiram’s Michael Smallwood responded with a 23-yard touchdown run but missed the PAT to take a lead into the locker room at halftime.

Stephone Adams hit a 20-yard touchdown pass in the third to take a 14-9 lead to Markens Felix, and Kaden Mitchell followed that up later in the third quarter with a 25-yard fumble return. The Wildcats missed the PAT on their third touchdown of the night.

A short fourth quarter score from two yards out finished off the Hornets on the night, unable to get the offense going in the second half.

Friday’s win put the Wildcats in the driver’s seat through the remainder of the non-region schedule. They’ll host South Paulding this coming Friday, September 4 as the 0-2 Spartans come to town after losing to North Paulding at home.

Hiram faces rival Paulding County this coming Friday on the road, before they open the region schedule against crosstown rival East Paulding on Sept. 11.

Paulding comes off a 26-7 win over Alexander on the road on Friday, moving to 2-0 on the year.
